Peggy’s Voice Actor Was Unaware Fans Disliked Her King of the Hill Character

Within the realm of adult animation, maternal figures are frequently written as the least compelling characters. Marge Simpson tends to be the straight-laced anchor of her household, and a similar critique applies to Lois Griffin in Family Guy. This narrative trope stretches all the way back to television’s inaugural primetime animated sitcom, The Flintstones, featuring Wilma Flintstone as arguably the most understated personality in the ensemble. King of the Hill, however, gloriously shatters this mold.

Rather than portraying her as the infallible moral compass typical of genre matriarchs, Peggy Hill is wonderfully complex, and her spectacular miscalculations drive the series’ greatest comedic highs. She is fiercely self-assured, boundary-pushing, impulsive, and remarkably unqualified for her position as a substitute Spanish educator. These very traits consistently thrust her into absurd predicaments—ranging from accidentally orchestrating the cross-border abduction of a child during a school trip to Mexico, to aggressively sabotaging a culinary critic at Bobby’s establishment in the latest season.

While her eccentricities win over countless viewers, she remains a polarizing figure among the fanbase. A quick scan of the King of the Hill subreddit reveals dedicated discussion boards questioning her massive ego and narcissistic tendencies. When the series made its triumphant return last year, Collider published a retrospective piece highlighting how she maintains a reputation as the fandom’s ultimate lightning rod for criticism.

Yet, amidst the virtual chorus of disapproval, the legendary performer who has breathed life into the character since 1997, Kathy Najimy, was blissfully unaware of the backlash.

During a press junket for season 15, when asked about the division surrounding Peggy, Najimy expressed genuine surprise, admitting she had no idea audiences harbored such grievances—prompting her to humorously quip that she might need some heavy medication and a strong drink to process the news.

Upon learning that viewers often cringe at Peggy’s intrusive tendencies, Najimy mounted a staunch defense of her alter ego, asking simply, “What mother doesn’t meddle in her kids’ business?”

Toby Huss, who voices the unforgettable Dale Gribble and shared the interview space, quickly rallied to support his longtime colleague.

“That is precisely the beauty of King of the Hill,” Huss noted. “These individuals are profoundly human, and true humanity inherently comes with a multitude of flaws. Peggy might occasionally veer down a path that makes you squirm, but she invariably reels it back in, preserving her fundamental humanity—just like every character on the show.”

Nodding in agreement, Najimy added, “Spot on. People are entitled to their opinions, but I firmly believe there is an entire demographic out there that adores Peggy precisely because she is sharp, unfiltered, and unapologetically authentic.”

It is difficult not to side with Najimy on this front. As uncomfortable as her escapades can occasionally be to witness, Peggy is gifted with far more daring and eccentric narrative arcs than the conventional animated sitcom mother. Marge Simpson would never inadvertently smuggle a foreign minor across international lines, face a formal legal trial, and still steadfastly refuse—while under oath—to concede her near-total lack of Spanish fluency. Only Peggy possesses that level of magnificent audacity, cementing her status as an icon you either cherish or completely write off.
