Payday 2 to Get Engine Update, DirectX 11, and Reduced File Size

Developers are preparing a major technical update.

Starbreeze Studios currently focuses on Payday 3. They have handed over support for the second game to the developers at Sidetrack Games, who recently announced a substantial technical overhaul.

Payday 2 will upgrade its Diesel 3.0 engine. The team plans the following improvements:

  • Transition to a 64-bit version
  • Update from DX9 to DirectX 11 rendering
  • Reduction of file size to roughly 32 GB
  • Faster load times on SSDs
  • 6-character lobby codes

Sidetrack Games intends to run an open beta for this engine update.

The team shared a short video announcement and a post on the Payday 2 Steam community page. They have not yet provided a detailed list of changes or benchmarks comparing load speeds and performance.
