The Saturday Night Live season finale transformed into a grand tribute to music royalty this past Saturday (May 16), as the legendary Paul McCartney took center stage. Hosted by Will Ferrell, the star-studded episode felt less like a standard variety show and more like a celebration of the Beatles icon, who went above and beyond by delivering three electrifying performances and appearing in several comedic sketches.
Returning to the iconic Studio 8H stage for his fifth appearance as a musical guest, McCartney marked a momentous comeback, appearing on the show for the first time in over 13 years. His storied history with the program dates back to performances in 1980, 1993, 2010, and 2012.
As a seasoned veteran of the SNL stage, McCartney kicked off the evening with a heartfelt rendition of “Days We Left Behind,” the stirring lead single from his forthcoming album, The Boys of Dungeon Lane, slated for release on May 29.
Later in the broadcast, he treated the audience to a high-energy performance of his timeless 1974 chart-topper, “Band on the Run.”
Beyond his musical sets, McCartney showcased his comedic chops. He joined host Will Ferrell for a hilarious bit during the monologue—playing on a mistaken identity gag involving Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith—and later popped up in a sketch alongside Ferrell and Marcello Hernández as a trio of eccentric mechanics pulling a fast one on unsuspecting customers.
The night concluded with a special encore. Rather than the customary quick wave during the credits, the show extended its runtime for an impromptu cast party. McCartney rocked the stage with his 1980 No. 1 hit, “Coming Up,” while the SNL cast danced along in high spirits.
