Paramount Pictures has unveiled plans for a new live-action Sonic feature set to debut during the 2028 holiday season. Marketed as part of a “Sonic universe,” the announcement implies this could be a character-focused spinoff rather than a direct numbered sequel.
Reports from Deadline indicate the untitled project will be produced by Original Film alongside Sega Sammy Group. No director or cast members have been confirmed yet. The franchise’s prior live-action entries were directed by Jeff Fowler and featured Ben Schwartz as Sonic, Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik, James Marsden as Tom Wachowski, with Idris Elba and Colleen O’Shaughnessey portraying Knuckles and Tails, respectively.
Whichever route the studio chooses, this will be the fifth Sonic theatrical release and arrives more than a year after the already announced Sonic the Hedgehog 4, which is scheduled for release on March 19, 2027. Announcing another installment ahead of full details for the next film may seem premature, but it follows the series’ consistent commercial success: the earlier trilogy amassed approximately $1.2 billion at the global box office.
Whether this new entry will effectively serve as Sonic 5 or instead spotlight a different character in a spinoff format—similar in spirit to the Paramount+ Knuckles series—remains to be seen. Share your thoughts in the comments below.
