Paramount Suspends New Lord of the Rings Film
A new cinematic project set within the Lord of the Rings universe, featuring a script penned by Stephen Colbert, has been indefinitely shelved. Following the recent acquisition deal between Paramount and Warner Bros., the initiative has fallen under the purview of David Ellison, who reportedly remains hesitant to greenlight its production at this time.
Plans originally called for principal photography to commence following the completion of The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. However, the studio’s new leadership intends to gauge the critical and commercial reception of that film before committing to further expansions of the franchise.
Alongside his son and screenwriter Philippa Boyens, Colbert spent approximately two years developing the screenplay for Shadow of the Past. The narrative was designed as a prequel-style exploration, drawing upon six chapters from The Fellowship of the Ring that were omitted from Peter Jackson’s original cinematic trilogy.
While the project’s ultimate fate remains uncertain, its future currently hinges on the performance of The Hunt for Gollum.
