Paradox Reveals Warfare in Europa Universalis 5
The new installment in the franchise places emphasis on refined military mechanics.
The team behind the grand strategy Europa Universalis 5 has published a new development diary. This entry focuses on military mechanics and demonstrates how battles will play out.
The developers are driven by an “attempt to build a simulator where every decision carries weight,” and they explain that “war in EU5 follows the same philosophy: armies are made up of people, logistics are vital, and the rest of the world will react to your conquests.”
At the start, most states in EU5 do not possess professional standing armies. In the many wars between kings and dukes, nations will rely on militias recruited from their own populations: peasants, townsfolk, and nobles. Because soldiers are members of the populace, they cannot perform civilian work while engaged in a campaign:
“This also means that casualties on the battlefield or losses for other reasons permanently reduce your population. And, of course, if you disband the remaining forces, the survivors will return home and resume normal life.”
Overall, the army is divided into four categories: infantry, cavalry, artillery, and support troops (who handle the army’s logistical and auxiliary needs).
The developers have implemented a logistics simulation:
“To create a believable system of war, the movement of your armies now depends on supply lines and access to resources.
Armies carry a stock of provisions, but they must replenish those supplies from friendly regions. This is represented by a line connecting the army to the nearest friendly territory. That line cannot be stretched indefinitely, and it can easily become a target for enemy forces.”
Europa Universalis 5 is scheduled for release on November 4, 2025.
