Owlcat Explains Why Rogue Trader Launched in Such a Buggy State
The launch of Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader was far from smooth.
While Rogue Trader is receiving considerable praise today, its initial release provoked notable dissatisfaction. In a recent conversation with PCGamesN, an Owlcat Games producer outlined why the game arrived in that state.
Anatoly Shestov said the team faced a difficult choice shortly before launch — either pare back content and player immersion or ship Rogue Trader with outstanding bugs:
“We were more ambitious than what was realistically achievable for Rogue Trader, and that is why the game shipped in a less-than-ideal condition — not because we wanted to cut corners on testing. No. A few months before release we decided the fourth chapter needed a rewrite. Normally you don’t make that kind of change so late in a full development cycle, but the decision came down to releasing a version with fewer bugs or one with greater immersive potential and more ‘defining’ moments. As a studio, we chose the latter (accepting more bugs).”
