Olivia Rodrigo Launches ‘Sad Lover Girl’ Era With New Single ‘Drop Dead’: Stream It Now

Olivia Rodrigo has officially unveiled her latest single, “Drop Dead.”

The pop sensation dropped the track this Friday (April 17), marking her first musical release in years and signaling the dawn of her You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love era. This song serves as one of the 13 tracks featured on the upcoming album, her first full-length project since the chart-topping 2023 release, Guts.

“Drop Dead” offers a glimpse into the thematic core of Rodrigo’s new record. In a recent conversation with British Vogue, the singer explained that the project is an exploration of heartbreak and vulnerability. “I realized my favorite romantic tracks resonate so deeply because they carry a subtle thread of yearning or apprehension,” she shared, noting that the album is essentially a collection of “sad love songs.”

“I held onto the belief that entering a healthy, committed relationship would naturally make me feel secure and resolve my internal struggles,” she reflected. “But life rarely follows that script. I’m a romantic at heart—I truly want that deep, dedicated connection—but navigating love these days is undeniably complex.”

In the lead-up to the launch, the Grammy-winning artist teased the track on social media with cryptic, atmospheric clips. One video featured Rodrigo enjoying a Guinness alongside an ethereal, upbeat preview of the song, while another showed her watching the world pass by from a train window, accompanied by the text: “It’s feminine intuition.”

Rodrigo has a track record of massive success; both “Drivers License” (from her debut album Sour) and “Vampire” (from Guts) claimed the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 upon release. Fans can now experience the evolution of her sound by listening to “Drop Dead” below.
