Nikita Buyanov Praises Gears of War: E-Day as Original Creator Criticizes Modern Developers
The creator of the original Gears of War is not a fan of a popular PvP tactic.
Gears of War: E-Day developers recently launched a beta test. Players who pre-ordered the game gained early access to the beta, while access for everyone else opens on August 13.
Users online began sharing gameplay footage and screenshots. Battlestate Games boss Nikita Buyanov noticed posts on social media and clearly appreciated The Coalition’s project, leaving a concise comment: “Juicy.”
Escape from Tarkov fans noted that Nikita Buyanov is “a man of culture” and joked that the shotgun from Gears of War: E-Day should now be added to Tarkov.

However, original Gears of War creator Cliff Bleszinski spoke out with criticism. He stipulated right away that he has not played GoW in a long time (especially multiplayer) and his opinion “comes from watching a lot of Twitch streams and YouTube videos.”
He pointed out that some people play multiplayer by constantly bouncing off walls and using a shotgun:
There is a whole group of players in Gears PvP multiplayer who play ONLY like that: wall bouncing and a shotgun. They literally only play like that. They use the cover-entering and cancel-entering mechanic to move across the map, creating an improvised “surfing” mode. And they dominate. Is it fun to watch? Sure. Is it fun to pull off? Yes, because it genuinely takes some skill. Is it cool to witness? Absolutely. Does it make sense and work in the gritty world of multiplayer games? No.
Cliff explained that there is a “HUGE difference” between such “surfers” darting across the map and people who play as intended (using cover and various weapons):
[This technique] ruins the game for everyone else trying to play differently. Why even create all these amazing weapons and a cool cover system if a certain number of (certainly skilled) players will just bypass the system and do this?
Cliff explains that such experienced players will easily crush newcomers on release day and make online battles “unplayable and completely uninteresting.”

The developer noted that if it were up to him, he would “nerf wall bouncing as much as possible in the ‘regular’ PvP mode, and THEN make a separate playlist or mode where this exploit was double-buffed.”
Cliff also stated that he considers executions in Gears of War a “huge waste of time and money” because “no one uses them” in multiplayer.
Gears of War: E-Day is scheduled for release on October 6, 2026, though buyers of the premium edition will be able to jump into the game five days earlier.
