Nicolas Cage has refuted claims made by director Jon Turteltaub regarding his return to the role of Benjamin Gates for a third installment of the National Treasure franchise.

The director previously stated that a script had finally been finalized to Disney’s satisfaction, expressing optimism that the project would move forward. However, Cage clarified that he has not committed to any such sequel, jokingly suggesting that directors should refrain from making public announcements before consulting with the cast.

Despite this, Cage did not entirely dismiss the possibility of returning to the franchise at some point in the future.

The original National Treasure, released in 2004, followed a historian and treasure hunter who uncovers a secret linked to the U.S. Declaration of Independence; it grossed approximately $347 million worldwide. The sequel, National Treasure: Book of Secrets, debuted in 2007 and proved even more successful, earning nearly $459 million.
