Next Tomb Raider Game Officially Delayed to 2028
The Tomb Raider franchise has encountered yet another major scheduling setback. Following the pattern set by Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, development on Tomb Raider: Catalyst has been extended by a full year, shifting its official launch window to 2028.
Both upcoming projects—Legacy of Atlantis and Catalyst—were initially unveiled during the 2025 Game Awards, slated for sequential releases in 2026 and 2027, respectively. However, those timelines have since been restructured. Earlier in June, collaborative efforts from Amazon Game Studios, Crystal Dynamics, and Flying Wild Hog confirmed that Legacy of Atlantis would instead debut on February 12, 2027. With a firm calendar date now locked in, enthusiasts felt reassured that the project would finally materialize in early 2027 barring any unforeseen hurdles.
The surprise revelation regarding Catalyst surfaced during an interview with The Game Business, in which Amazon’s head of gaming, Jeffrey Gattis, casually noted that the title is now tracking for a 2028 arrival. Because the game previously lacked a specific release date beyond a broad launch year, the update effectively confirms a twelve-month postponement.

Gattis’s dialogue primarily centered around Amazon Luna, highlighting strategic approaches to scaling the cloud gaming ecosystem and broadening its active user base. Amazon aims to establish Luna as a versatile hub offering diverse entertainment avenues, allowing subscribers to access varied experiences without purchasing expensive hardware. While elaborating on this broader vision, Gattis casually dropped the details regarding the upcoming Tomb Raider releases.
We range from what we call Game Night games, which are those phone-as-a-controller games — single-A titles that are in the single millions of dollars to develop — all the way up to AAA. We have announced the two Tomb Raider titles. [Legacy of] Atlantis comes February 12 next year, and then we’ll follow on in 2028 with the next one. We’re excited about those. There are some other AAA things that are in various stages of discussion right now. Ultimately, we want to build an identity with Luna, where we have a content portfolio that resonates with people, where they think, ‘Oh gosh, that’s the place that has Tomb Raider, and maybe Bond, and they have these other things.’ And that takes time to go build. But, for us to be the platform we want to be, and the one we believe we can be, you very much have to have original content.
It remains unclear whether these schedule adjustments stem from Amazon’s desire to prioritize the expansion of the Luna ecosystem. Even so, the gaming community has largely responded with understanding, prioritizing polish and quality over a rushed rollout. Furthermore, the extra time afforded by the Legacy of Atlantis delay ensures the development team can thoroughly refine the experience before shifting their full focus to subsequent chapters.
