Daft Punk Debuts Animated ‘Contact’ Video as Part of Fortnite Collaboration

Music News

Daft Punk has returned to the visual realm with a newly released animated video for “Contact,” the climactic track from their Grammy-winning album Random Access Memories (2013). The clip accompanies the duo’s latest partnership with Fortnite.

The short film sends the duo’s signature robotic characters hurtling through cosmic terrain and nods to the aesthetic of Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem, the 2003 anime project that visually interpreted music from their Discovery era.

For this release, the band and collaborators present an edited cut of the song: the video version runs approximately four minutes and forty-eight seconds, trimmed from the original six minutes and twenty-three seconds.

Developed by Epic Games together with Magnopus, the piece is part of the in-game Daft Punk Experience that launched in Fortnite in September. The experience features 31 songs woven into multiple interactive rooms where players can mix tracks, choreograph avatar dances in a virtual “Daft Club”—including footage from the band’s Alive tour and Alive 2007—and build playful Lego-style music videos starring the group’s likenesses.

In an apparent Easter egg tied to the new video, Thomas Bangalter included “Contact” in his October DJ set at Because Beaubourg, the retrospective exhibition presented by Because Music in Paris. That evening—featuring appearances from Busy P, Erol Alkan and Fred again..—marked Bangalter’s first public DJ performance in 16 years.
