New Star Wars Story Addresses the Controversial Ending of the Sequel Trilogy’s Most Divisive Film
When the inaugural trailer for The Force Awakens debuted, it sparked a wildfire of anticipation. A new trilogy was taking flight, spearheaded by rising stars like Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, and Adam Driver. More importantly, these newcomers were set to share the screen with cinematic icons including Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, and Harrison Ford. At that moment, the Star Wars faithful felt invigorated, eager for a fresh chapter in a legendary saga.
Years later, the landscape has shifted. The sequel trilogy, helmed by J.J. Abrams and Rian Johnson, has become a polarizing subject, leaving behind a trail of unanswered questions that many fans prefer to leave in the past. Previous attempts to reconcile these narrative gaps through peripheral media have often felt lackluster.
Enter Star Wars: Legacy, a new novel from New York Times bestselling author Madeleine Roux. Known for her evocative work in gothic fantasy and science fiction, Roux tackles the franchise’s most persistent enigmas head-on. Most notably, the book provides vital context for that pivotal, debated moment in The Rise of Skywalker, where Rey claims the Skywalker name at the ancestral Lars homestead on Tatooine.
As the title suggests, Legacy is a deep dive into the nature of identity and heritage. Despite the narrative turbulence of the sequel trilogy, the core of Rey’s journey remains: her persistent, sometimes desperate, search for belonging and her struggle to shoulder the mantle of a Jedi in the wake of The Last Jedi. Adrift and without a mentor—save for the lingering influence of Luke’s salvaged texts and an unsettling connection to Kylo Ren—Rey finds herself at a crossroads. Her lightsaber, a relic of Anakin and Luke, lies damaged, mirroring her own inner turmoil as she transitions toward the more self-assured warrior seen in the final film.
Roux fills this narrative void by highlighting the critical mentorship of Leia Organa. Bridging the gap between the second and third films, the story follows Rey as she seeks to restore her kyber crystal, a quest that leads her to the ancient Jedi forge on Tython. She is joined on this pilgrimage by Leia, Chewbacca, R2-D2, and C-3PO.

It serves as the perfect backdrop for Rey to uncover lost Jedi history and confront the isolation that has defined her existence. Attempting to suppress her inner darkness, Rey is forced to confront her fears under the watchful eye of Leia. As the daughter of Darth Vader, Leia possesses a unique empathy for the struggle against internal shadows, stepping into a guiding role that transcends mere instruction.
Their bond is a meeting of two souls shaped by profound loss. Leia, hardened by a lifetime of conflict and the heartbreak of losing Han, Luke, and Ben, finds a kindred spirit in the young scavenger. While Rey initially rejects her darker impulses, Leia yearns to reclaim the life she might have had if she had fully embraced her path as a Jedi. Together, they learn the most vital lesson of all: that true strength comes from accepting the entirety of one’s history, flaws and all.

It clarifies that Leia was not just a leader, but the essential mentor who prevented Rey’s total descent into the Dark Side. Their maternal, deeply nurturing connection makes Rey’s final decision to honor the Skywalker name feel not just earned, but inevitable. In the end, while Luke provided the spark, it was Leia who truly forged the Jedi Rey was always meant to become.
Star Wars: Legacy hits bookshelves on July 28.
