New Sci-Fi D&D Project Breaks Kickstarter Records with $3.7 Million Day One
Avantris Entertainment is on a trajectory to shatter their own impressive crowdfunding benchmarks. In 2023, the actual-play powerhouse secured a staggering $4 million on Kickstarter for The Crooked Moon, their atmospheric folk-horror campaign setting.
Their latest endeavor, Neon Odyssey, transforms the D&D 5e framework into a sprawling space opera trilogy, masterfully blending the adventurous spirit of Star Wars with the gritty, stylized flair of Cowboy Bebop, all wrapped in a vibrant synthwave aesthetic. Shortly after its launch on Tuesday morning, the crowdfunding initiative gained such immense traction that it reportedly overwhelmed Kickstarter’s servers. The project obliterated its initial $60,000 target in under 30 minutes, quickly soaring past $3.68 million with nearly a month remaining in the campaign.
This explosive start positions Neon Odyssey to become one of the most successful third-party D&D crowdfunding projects to date, further highlighting the massive, underserved demand for premium, system-expanding content within the 5e ecosystem.
“Drawing inspiration from seminal sci-fi cinema, retro gaming, classic animation, and the enduring nostalgia of synthwave, Neon Odyssey provides players and Game Masters with a comprehensive toolkit to forge their own galactic legends,” the company shared in a recent statement. “The project includes an immersive campaign setting, cinematic starship combat, a suite of new player options, alien adversaries, exotic locales, bounty-hunting mechanics, and high-stakes interstellar intrigue.” The trilogy also introduces an innovative space combat engine, dedicated vehicle rules, and a dedicated Machinist class, alongside extensive reskinning options for existing classes. Players can also expect over 40 fresh subclasses and more than 30 unique playable species.
Released in February, the project’s three-minute promotional trailer has already amassed over 1.7 million views on YouTube. Animated with a distinctive retro flair by Brazen Animation and geologiq, the video features characters that evoke the iconic cast of Cowboy Bebop. It serves as an atmospheric backdrop to the track “Among the Stars” by Max Cruise—featuring Ollie Wride and Nikki Flores—with lyrics that perfectly capture the campaign’s essence: “Out among the stars, that’s where you’ll find me / With starlight in your eyes, you set the world on fire / Come join me on this neon odyssey.”
The trilogy consists of the Outrunner’s Handbook, which centralizes character options and core mechanics; the Cosmic Codex, containing the Stardust Rhapsody campaign setting, a bestiary, and a compendium of magical artifacts; and the Overdrive Expansion, which provides supplementary content and optional advanced rules.
The Neon Odyssey Kickstarter campaign is scheduled to conclude on June 3 at 11:59 p.m. ET.
