This latest teaser delivers our very first substantial look at Jason Momoa as Blanka, revealing a cinematic interpretation that leans heavily into a deeply primal and unsettlingly lethal side of the iconic mutant.

Following a setup where Ryu (Andrew Koji) finds himself cornered in a brutal cage match orchestrated by M. Bison (David Dastmalchian), the wandering martial artist is forced into combat against Blanka. In this adaptation, the character operates as a completely untamed predator who dispatches victims with terrifying glee. Blanka drags an unfortunate prisoner straight into his lair, executing them with trademark electrical discharges. The brutal sequence even incorporates a nostalgic nod to Street Fighter 2 via a cartoonish X-ray effect as the captive is thoroughly fried, culminating in the green brawler unleashing his infamous Rolling Attack.

As Ryu attempts to de-escalate the confrontation by insisting he wants no trouble, Momoa delivers an eccentric, deadpan response: “Then you die. OK?” It feels like a heightened, cinematic evolution of the character’s vocal stylings from Street Fighter 6. If any doubts remained, this footage solidifies that director Kitao Sakurai is embracing a wonderfully campy aesthetic rather than pursuing a gritty, self-serious tone. Given that the source material features a colossal Russian wrestler who fights using deadly bear hugs alongside a jungle dweller equipped with spontaneous thunderbolts, lean-in silliness is undoubtedly the correct artistic direction.

Looking back at classical Street Fighter 2 canon, Blanka began as a young boy named Jimmy whose aircraft met a tragic end in the Amazon rainforest. Surviving the crash, he was altered by electric eels—logistics that fighting games rarely feel compelled to explain—transforming him into the emerald beast known worldwide. While initial iterations cast him as somewhat menacing, subsequent entries gradually softened his image; games like Street Fighter 5 and 6 famously showcase Blanka peddling custom merchandise of himself and working to boost local tourism to support his mother.

At worst, the upcoming Street Fighter cinematic project might shape up to be a fascinatingly chaotic spectacle. Even so, it is swinging for the fences, promising pitch-perfect recreations of signature moves and a wealth of franchise nods. Just fourteen seconds into the latest Blanka preview, eagle-eyed fans can spot a quick cameo by prominent FGC creator and content creator Maximilian Dood, proving the creative team genuinely understands the community. We will find out if that deep-cut knowledge translates to box-office glory when the movie finally lands in theaters on October 16.
