New Mod Adds Liberty City, North Yankton, and Cayo Perico to GTA 5
The creators revealed that they were inspired by Red Dead Redemption 2, which includes Blackwater and New Austin from Red Dead Redemption. They decided to create something similar for Liberty City with authentic vehicles, local NPCs, and original sound effects. Liberty City radio stations play the tracks from Grand Theft Auto IV.
Players can move between maps using several methods. The simplest and quickest is teleportation via the F11 key, which instantly places the player at Star Junction in Liberty City, Cavalry Boulevard in Ludendorff, the party beach on Cayo Perico, or back in Pillbox Hill, with slight time jumps of 1 to 2 hours forward or backward.
Another option involves heading to Los Santos International Airport to buy a ticket to Liberty City or North Yankton for $350, though funds are not actually deducted. There are no direct flights to the Caribbean island, but a cutscene plays showing takeoff and landing, sometimes with overlapping planes.
Players can also fly manually by boarding an aircraft and heading northeast for Liberty City or south for Cayo Perico, while Ludendorff has no map or radar marker. This method takes time and advances the in-game clock when switching zones, meaning a daytime departure results in arrival during the evening or night, and police or random events can spawn in the ocean during the trip.
The docks offer a method to ship vehicles between locations for $3,500, which is not deducted from the account, allowing players to experiment with unique vehicles, liveries, and models from each city.
The modernized Liberty City resembles the city explored with Niko Bellic, featuring LCPD patrol cars, local buses, residents, visitors, a functioning subway system, and enterable buildings with interiors marked on the map. Iconic Easter eggs return, including the beating heart inside the Statue of Happiness and the swing glitch.
The ability to explore Ludendorff returns through the mod, though only two streets are accessible before players fall through textures due to the original world design. Landmarks include the frozen alien under the bridge and the bank from the Grand Theft Auto V Prologue, alongside snow-covered vehicles with North Yankton plates.
Cayo Perico feels less polished with a largely deserted island aside from NPCs in boats, and parked vehicles often vanish when players attempt to enter them. Cheat codes assist with navigation, but El Rubio’s mansion has inactive infiltration and escape points along with an inactive elevator, requiring players to reach the vault through the exit doors without air travel available from the island.
The mod includes flaws such as Ludendorff and Cayo Perico playing Los Santos Underground Radio, West Coast Talk Radio, and iFruit Radio, alongside a major issue where loading a different save file causes the game to crash, restricting players to their most recent save.
Installing the mod is impossible on pirated versions of GTA 5, and it requires handling of BattleEye to switch between the mod and GTA Online.
World Travel announced that development of the Liberty City Preservation Project has ceased after Rockstar Games requested its removal on January 15, likely due to plans for a GTA 4 remaster. The modders complied to avoid legal issues.
Players have enabled online modes, run the mod on Steam Deck, and played it on PS4.
The Liberty City Preservation Project is available in standard, HD for graphics mods, and FiveM compatible versions for RP servers.
