Netflix Reports Box Office Figures for One of Its Films for the First Time
For the first time in its history, Netflix has published official box office numbers. The film in question is the acclaimed Spanish drama “The Black Ball” (“La Bola Negra”), which opened in the US this week.
The Penélope Cruz title earned $277,500 over its opening weekend while playing in just four theaters. That is a record for Spanish cinema and for non-English-language releases overall, and the strongest debut of its kind since the Oscar-winning “Parasite,” which took in $393,000 from three theaters in 2019.
Directed by Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, “The Black Ball” weaves together the stories of several men in the 1930s and the 2010s. The cast includes Álvaro Lafuente, Miguel Bernardeau, Glenn Close and others. The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, where it won an award for directing. It arrives on Netflix on December 2.
Netflix plans to report box office results for its theatrical releases over the next six months. Upcoming titles include “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew” and “The Adventures of Cliff Booth,” starring Brad Pitt, among others.
