Netflix Considers Greta Gerwig’s “Narnia” a Failure
Netflix is reportedly grappling with significant anxiety regarding Greta Gerwig’s adaptation of The Magician’s Nephew, the film intended to launch a brand-new trilogy based on The Chronicles of Narnia. According to reports from World of Reel, citing internal sources and The InSneider, streaming executives are deeply dissatisfied with initial test screenings and fear the project could be a major failure.
One insider went as far as to label the film “dreadful,” while another drew unfavorable comparisons to Ava DuVernay’s A Wrinkle in Time, a high-profile Disney production that resulted in substantial financial losses.
Sources have also highlighted potential flaws in the narrative structure, noting that the children do not enter Narnia until the third act. While it is possible that further editing could address these concerns, it remains unclear whether the creative team has successfully mitigated these issues. The film’s production budget is estimated at roughly $280 million, though some reports suggest the actual costs could be even higher.
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew is slated for a theatrical release on February 12, 2027, followed by its debut on Netflix on April 2.
