Since its launch earlier this month on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S, NBA The Run has received a polarized reception. In our initial assessment, we highlighted its core potential as a compelling basketball experience, while noting that a lack of robust features made it feel somewhat hollow for those looking beyond online multiplayer. Fortunately, developer Play By Play Studios is listening; they have officially unveiled an ambitious roadmap aimed at fleshing out the game, with a long-awaited campaign mode leading the charge.

In a detailed update shared on their official blog, the team outlined their vision for the coming months. While today’s patch focuses on essential bug fixes and stability, the upcoming content drops promise to significantly shift the game’s momentum. Next month, players can look forward to a fresh infusion of content, including three new playable athletes and potential tie-ins to the latest NBA Draft class.

August marks the debut of the “Summer Heat” season, introducing a persistent championship belt that evolves as players compete. This mid-summer update is substantial, bringing a overhauled drive camera for a more dynamic feel, a dedicated practice mode, new rule variations, and additional New York City courts. Beyond these additions, the studio is refining the AI, polishing the HUD, and teasing the arrival of legendary figures from the sport’s history.

Looking further ahead into the fall, Play By Play Studios plans to establish a consistent cadence of seasonal updates every few months. These future iterations will prioritize competitive integrity through ranked modes and social improvements like voice chat. Most importantly, the roadmap culminates in a dedicated “campaign mode” slated for Spring 2027. While the developers are keeping specifics under wraps, the goal is to create a versatile mode playable solo or with friends, either locally or online. As the team noted, “to do this right, it’s going to take time,” but it serves as the ultimate proof of their commitment to the title.
