Universal is exploring ideas for sequels to Wicked, studio executive Michael Morris revealed.
“Given Wicked’s success and its strong fan following, we almost have an obligation to ask: how can we continue this universe? Have we solved that yet? No. But work is already underway,” Morris told Vulture.
Wicked is adapted from Gregory Maguire’s novel and the 2003 Broadway musical of the same name. The project functions as an unofficial prequel to The Wizard of Oz, chronicling the friendship and rivalry between the green-skinned Elphaba and the beloved Glinda.
The first film adaptation, The Tale of the Wicked Witch of the West, opened in 2024 and grossed $758 million. The follow-up, Wicked: Forever, premiered last week and set several box-office records. Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande headlined both films, which were directed by John M. Chu (Crazy Rich Asians).
