‘Mortal Kombat 3’ Film Receives Green Light from Warner Bros

Mortal Kombat 2 has not yet reached theaters, and the studio is already moving ahead with a sequel.

At a Mortal Kombat 2 panel during New York Comic Con, screenwriter Jeremy Slater revealed that New Line and Warner Bros. have already given the green light for a third film. He said he will return to write the screenplay for the trilogy’s next installment. The team didn’t share further details, so the panel concentrated primarily on the upcoming sequel.

Simon McQuoid returned to the director’s chair for the second film, having helmed the 2021 reboot. Most of the principal cast are set to reprise their roles. New additions include Karl Urban as Johnny Cage, Adeline Rudolph as Kitana, Tati Gabrielle as Jade, and Martyn Ford as Shao Kahn.

Mortal Kombat 2 was originally scheduled for release on October 24, 2025, but the date was pushed back to May 15, 2026. Industry sources say one factor behind the delay was the success of Superman and other Warner Bros. releases in 2025. With the studio already cashing in on its major projects, there was no pressing need to release another tentpole that year, so Mortal Kombat 2 was moved into the 2026 release calendar.

The early announcement of a third film supports this explanation, suggesting the postponement was a strategic reshuffle of release dates rather than a sign of production troubles.
