Mortal Kombat 2 Will Be as Much a Film About Kitana as It Is About Johnny Cage
Johnny Cage, portrayed by Karl Urban, is being positioned as the face of the forthcoming Mortal Kombat 2 — but the story won’t focus on him alone.
Warner Bros.’ promotional push for the Mortal Kombat 2 sequel spotlights Johnny Cage (Karl Urban), creating the impression that his character will be the film’s centerpiece.
However, director Simon McQuoid and actress Adeline Rudolph — who plays Kitana — indicate the narrative will broaden beyond a single protagonist.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, McQuoid said he wanted to amplify the presence of the franchise’s female characters, and the choice was clear.
“Naturally, Kitana and Jade. There are other excellent female characters, but these two felt like the right fit for the sequel.”
Jade will be portrayed by Tati Gabrielle, known for her role in Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, where she appeared opposite Adeline Rudolph.
Rudolph herself noted that the script felt grand and layered, weaving together several realms within the franchise.
“When I first read the screenplay, it felt like two universes braided together. There’s the Earthrealm, and then Edenia and Outworld. Kitana’s storyline is closely interwoven with Johnny Cage’s throughout the film.”
The premiere of Mortal Kombat 2 is scheduled for May 15, 2026.
