Modder Restores Cut GTA: San Andreas Content and Mechanics After 21 Years

Some features were present in the game but went unused due to bugs or flawed code.

An updated version of “SilentPatch” was released this summer for the PC versions of the Grand Theft Auto 3D trilogy. This fan-made patch not only fixes numerous technical issues, but also restores the functionality of certain mechanics and brings back cut content.

The developer of SilentPatch stated that the update “fixes hundreds of character lines.” They specified that not all phrases were restored:

In this release of SilentPatch, I relied on research by Kaizo M and used his tools to identify even more audio issues, fixing as many of them as I could. Not all unused dialogue has been restored, as some did not find a suitable place in the final version of the game—but everything that I felt was overlooked and not intentionally cut has been restored; with this update [to SilentPatch], you will definitely notice a greater variety of lines used almost everywhere in the game.

The modder reviewed the update using GTA: San Andreas as an example. Pedestrians can now start conversations about the weather, and CJ can reply to those lines. Players will also be able to hear various lines from fleeing criminals.

Gang members received additional lines as well; for instance, hostile NPCs can ask the protagonist about gang affiliation.

Vendors also received dialogue lines that trigger when CJ aims a weapon at them. The modder noted that the gunsmith had more than 15 lines, all of which were previously unused.

GTA: San Andreas now awards a $50 “Good Citizen” bonus for helping catch a criminal who is being chased by a police officer.
