Ubisoft is currently navigating a period of significant turbulence. Amidst a landscape of internal restructuring, widespread layoffs, and a pivot in business strategy that has seen its market value plummet, the publisher has pulled the plug on several high-profile projects. Notable casualties include the troubled Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake, while other anticipated titles—such as the Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag remake—have faced substantial delays, sparking widespread frustration among the fanbase.

The future of the Watch Dogs intellectual property has also been shrouded in uncertainty. However, according to prominent industry insider Tom Henderson, the tech-focused series is effectively dormant, with no further entries currently on the horizon.

When the original Watch Dogs debuted, it was touted as a formidable rival to Grand Theft Auto V. Its core identity revolved around sophisticated hacking mechanics set within a digital recreation of Chicago. Although originally slated for a late 2013 arrival, the project was famously pushed back to May 2014 to ensure further polish.

The franchise expanded in 2016 with Watch Dogs 2, which swapped the gritty atmosphere of its predecessor for a vibrant, colorful depiction of San Francisco. This was followed in 2020 by Watch Dogs: Legion, which transported players to a near-future, post-Brexit London.

Despite the gaming IP remaining stagnant for nearly six years, a live-action Watch Dogs film adaptation successfully concluded principal photography on September 13, 2024. Nevertheless, a premiere date for the cinematic project remains unconfirmed.
