Miley Cyrus Gives Midnight Star’s ‘Midas Touch’ the Rock Treatment: Watch

Miley Cyrus

Everything Miley Cyrus touches is turning to … rock? The singer-songwriter took on Midnight Star’s funky ’80s tune “Midas Touch” during her virtual concert “Miley in Layers” with Magnum ice cream on Thursday (June 10), and transformed it into banger that could’ve fit onto Plastic Hearts.

Before kicking off her set, Cyrus shared, “This is my version of ‘Miley’s Touch,’ because everything I touch turns to gold.” The crunchy guitars then kick in, and Cyrus growls the vocals.

“You say you’re going through changes/ Every day it seems your life is up and down/ And you say that you’re lookin’ for an answer/ Everywhere you look it seems you can’t be found,” she sings in her gritty voice. She went the extra step to make the song her own in the chorus, tweaking the lyrics just slightly: “I’ve got the Miley’s Touch/ Everything I touch turns to gold, yeah, darlin’/ I’ve got Miley’s Touch/ Baby, let me touch your body and your soul.”

Midnight Star’s version of the tune, from their 1986 album Headlines, peaked at No. 42 on the Billboard Hot 100 in November 1986.

During the brief set, Cyrus also performed “Gimme What I Want” and “Hate Me” off her 2020 rock-oriented album Plastic Hearts.

The virtual show was interspersed with behind-the-scenes footage, as well as Cyrus discussing what pleasure means to her.

“Being true to pleasure for me is feeling fully fulfilled at the end of the day knowing that you tried something that scared you, that you conquered it. Maybe even if you failed by trying, you succeeded because you didn’t just live in that fear,” she explained. “I always feel the kind of most fulfilled when I do when I do something that, whether it’s terrifying to me or it’s something new, or again, sometimes I think failure is the most important ingredient to success because the next day you have the opportunity to try again.”
