The genuine camaraderie between Selena Gomez and her Only Murders in the Building castmates, Steve Martin and Martin Short, is widely considered one of Hollywood’s most wholesome dynamics. However, according to Short, that bond was nearly fractured in September when he committed a legendary social blunder during Gomez’s wedding to music producer Benny Blanco.

While appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live! this past Wednesday, the 75-year-old comedy veteran characterized the nuptials as “exquisite” and “perfect,” with the sole exception of a chaotic incident during the reception.

A Slicing Disaster

Short explained that he was seated at the rear of the reception tent with a group of 12 colleagues from the Only Murders crew when he noticed a “small” cake positioned near their section. Under the mistaken assumption that the gala featured individual cakes for different tables, Short decided to secure a piece before Steve Martin made his exit for the evening.

“I figured, ‘Steve, you can’t leave yet without a piece of wedding cake!’” Short told Kimmel. Fork in hand, he carved into the dessert, only to be met with a chorus of horrified shouts from his companions. It wasn’t a secondary treat; it was the primary wedding cake. Short hilariously recounted his failed attempt to repair the damage with a fork, which he likened to amateur “frosting surgery.”

The blunder reportedly left Steve Martin “flabbergasted.” Martin allegedly turned to fellow attendee Paul Rudd and whispered, “So, do we just leave?”

Hollywood “Cosmetic Surgery”

Fortunately, the event’s culinary team intervened immediately. Short joked that the chefs performed a specialized brand of “Hollywood surgery” on the confection, restoring its aesthetic appeal while teasing that the cake had officially “had a little work done.”

Though Short and Martin agreed to keep the incident under wraps to avoid upsetting the bride, the secret didn’t last long. As Short was making his way out, Gomez caught him off guard. “Hey Marty,” she teased, “I heard you tried to eat my cake.”

A Fatherly Bond

Mishaps aside, Short spoke with deep affection for the couple, noting how rare it is to witness a pair so clearly destined for one another. He described Gomez as being like an “extra child” of his, expressing his immense joy that she found a partner like Blanco.

“They are just the greatest hang,” Short added. “They are wildly in love, and he is a truly wonderful guy.”
