Mariah Carey has spent the past year celebrating her three decades in the music biz. But on Wednesday (June 16) she dug deep for an homage to a more recent vintage tune via a hilarious version of a 2020 TikTok pandemic challenge.
“Just for laughs… from last year’s lockdown when all I did was wipe tings down,” the singer wrote alongside sponge and laughing-crying emoji and #HappyAnniveraryObsessed. In the clip, Carey opens the challenge in a pink robe, with giant curlers in her hair and her face covered by a green detox mask.
The swipe reveals Carey in a body-hugging golden dress and then in male drag, kitted out in a black tracksuit and black baseball hat covering a doo rag and a fake chin beard, asking, “Why are you so obsessed with me?” while hitting one of her signature glass-shattering whistle notes. The gender-flip is a nod to a look Carey debuted in the original “Obsessed” video, in which she played a male stalker, widely believed at the time to be a winky dig at Eminem.
“Obsessed” appeared on Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel and was seen as a response to Em’s 2009 track “Bagpipes,” in which he rapped, “Mariah, what ever happened to us, why did we have to break up/ Nick Cannon better back the f— up/ I’m not playing, I want her back, you punk.” She answered in the original visual for the song, which featured her Slim Carey character and the lines, “It must be the weed, it must be the E/ Why are you so obsessed with me?”
