Magic: The Gathering Reveals 2027 In-Universe Sets Featuring Underwater Adventures and Giant Robots

Magic: The Gathering 2027 Preview: Underwater realms and giant robot battles.

Wizards of the Coast is setting its sights on 2027, offering a glimpse into the future of Magic: The Gathering. During the recent MagicCon Amsterdam event, the team unveiled their full lineup of “in-universe” expansions for the upcoming year, alongside an expanded global tour for the MagicCon event series.

The 2027 schedule maintains a rhythmic balance, alternating between three original in-universe sets and three Universes Beyond crossover releases, ensuring players won’t be overwhelmed by consecutive external IP sets. While the crossover themes remain under wraps, the core Magic releases promise fresh narratives and inventive settings.

Nauctis: The Sunken Realm – February 5, 2027

Kicking off the year is Nauctis, an ambitious exploration of an oceanic plane. Far more than a simple merfolk-focused set, it introduces a submerged world featuring deep-sea diving gear and unique aquatic adaptations that promise to redefine life underwater in the multiverse.

This release will also serve as the catalyst for a new multi-year storyline, effectively transitioning players away from this year’s Reality Fracture climax.

Kamigawa: Titanbreach – June 4, 2027

The summer brings a high-octane collision between planes. A massive Omenpath tear rips through the skies of Kamigawa, bleeding in the monstrous threats of Ikoria. This event is set to deliver a cinematic clash of kaiju-sized proportions, perfectly suited for fans of giant mechs and titanic creature battles.

Zhalfir – October 1, 2027

The final in-universe set of the year marks a triumphant return to Zhalfir. Now established as its own plane, this iteration of the kingdom carries the scars and historical influences of New Phyrexia and Mirrodin. The set will feature the return of the time-manipulating planeswalker Teferi Akosa, grounding the experience in the rich, afro-fantasy roots that made the region so iconic in Magic lore.

2027 MagicCon Schedule

The tournament and fan experience circuit is expanding significantly, with four major stops planned for 2027:

  • MagicCon: Detroit – February 26-28
  • MagicCon: Tokyo – May 14-16
  • MagicCon: Las Vegas – August 27-29
  • MagicCon: Amsterdam – December 3-5

Additionally, collectors and Commander enthusiasts can look forward to a new Mystery Booster set specifically tailored for the Commander format, which will blend classic cards with bold, experimental mechanics.

Preparing for Reality Fracture

Before the 2027 cycle begins, focus remains on the upcoming Reality Fracture release. The set explores the fallout of Jace’s multiversal tampering, offering reimagined twists on legendary characters and beloved cards. Beyond the standard set, players can hunt for the new Secret Lair Bundle, which includes exclusive artist-driven card variants, collector boosters, and themed basics—a must-have for those seeking distinct aesthetics for their decks.
