Magic Reveals 4 Exciting New Star Trek Commander Decks, Featuring the Greatest Villain in Franchise History

During the July 14 WeeklyMTG broadcast, Wizards of the Coast unveiled their highly anticipated Magic: The Gathering – Star Trek Universes Beyond collection. The sneak peek showcased a sprawling array of cards spanning six decades of the legendary science-fiction franchise, anchored by four distinct Commander decks. These decks are designed to let enthusiasts replicate classic galactic skirmishes through a blend of innovative mechanics and established Magic heritage.

The “We Are the Borg” deck, an Esper (white-blue-black) build helmed by the Borg Queen, highlights the new “Assimilate” mechanic. This feature allows players to seize an opponent’s creature and transform it into a Borg artifact creature, complete with a +1/+1 counter. As Magic’s principal game designer Gavin Verhey explained during the stream, the mechanic originated as a bespoke feature for these decks but proved so thematic that it was integrated elsewhere, perfectly capturing the essence of Borg-style assimilation.

Functionally, the Borg cards mirror the behavior of the beloved Slivers, providing passive buffs to your integrated artifact creatures. While full decklists remain under wraps, the Borg Queen card—spotted in the Black Welcome Deck—grants all controlled artifacts +2/+0 and assimilates targets directly from an opponent’s graveyard upon entering the battlefield. It’s a creative interpretation of the Borg’s signature nanoprobe transformation, effectively repurposing defeated foes into functional tools for the Collective.

For fans of the Klingon Empire, the Mardu (red-white-black) “Klingon Fury” deck is commanded by Worf, Enterprise’s Chief of Security, focusing on aggressive, board-wide disruption. Conversely, the “Landing Party” deck—a Bant (green-white-blue) setup led by Spock—celebrates the retro aesthetic of the original 1960s series. This deck leans into the “landfall” mechanic, rewarding players for expanding their territory, likely incorporating the innovative Lander tokens seen in Edge of Eternities.

Rounding out the quartet, the Jeskai (blue-red-white) “Federation Fleet” deck is led by Captain Jean-Luc Picard, emphasizing card draw and the deployment of iconic spacecraft. The set will feature three unique iterations of the Enterprise, alongside other legendary vessels such as the Voyager. Players can look forward to these decks, which will be available in both standard and Collector’s Edition formats when the set officially launches on November 13. Further previews are scheduled for July 17 during MagicCon: Amsterdam.
