Madonna has officially settled a decades-old mystery for a Spanish soccer club that was desperately searching for a piece of its own history: a jersey worn by the Queen of Pop more than 30 years ago.
Responding to a sentimental inquiry from Celta Vigo, the music icon confirmed on Saturday via X (formerly Twitter) that she is still in possession of the vintage kit. “This shirt is hanging in my archives! I am wearing and representing your team in spirit!” she shared, putting an end to the club’s long-standing curiosity.
The quest began earlier this week when the Galician club published an open letter addressed to the superstar. They were eager to discover if she had kept the sky-blue-and-white jersey she famously wore during her 1990 performance at the club’s Balaídos stadium.
In the appeal, Celta Vigo’s president, Marián Mouriño Terrazo, noted how Madonna’s legacy of defying conventions mirrored the club’s own philosophy. “Over time, we grew to admire everything you represented: the courage to challenge the status quo and the strength to stand up to those who try to limit you,” Mouriño Terrazo wrote. “Our club sees itself in that same spirit of independence. That is why we held onto the hope of finding that specific garment.”
The president’s letter concluded with a direct plea: “Do you still have it? If you know where it is, or if you’d like to help us bring it home, please reach out.”
Madonna’s confirmation was sparked by a stirring video shared by the team, featuring a women’s choir and a string orchestra performing a symphonic rendition of her 1989 masterpiece, “Like a Prayer.” The performance took place center-stage at Balaídos stadium just before their high-stakes clash against Real Madrid.
