Lucasfilm Reportedly Rethought Plans for Star Wars Crossover Movie

Following the weak theatrical run of The Mandalorian & Grogu, the studio is seeking a new approach to concluding the stories of The Mandalorian, Ahsoka, and Skeleton Crew.

Back in 2023, Lucasfilm announced a film directed by Dave Filoni designed to unite and conclude the storylines of The Mandalorian, Ahsoka, and other tales surrounding the conflict between the New Republic and the remnants of the Empire. Those plans may now have changed. According to insider Daniel Richtman, the studio is considering turning the feature-length crossover into a Disney+ miniseries that would also include characters from Skeleton Crew.

This potential format shift comes on the heels of the weak box office performance of The Mandalorian & Grogu. The franchise’s first theatrical film in seven years grossed roughly $345 million worldwide, marking the lowest result among live-action Star Wars feature films. Disney management subsequently acknowledged that the box office returns fell short of company expectations, even though the movie did boost franchise merchandise sales.

The planned crossover does not have a release date yet, but it will definitely not arrive anytime soon. Din Djarin and Grogu already received a continuation of their story in the feature-length The Mandalorian & Grogu, meaning Lucasfilm must at least wrap up the next phase of the conflict against Grand Admiral Thrawn in the second season of Ahsoka, which is expected in 2027.

The fate of Skeleton Crew remains uncertain. Kerry Condon, who played Fara, previously shared that she had heard about the possibility of a second season, but Lucasfilm has yet to announce it. If Richtman’s information is confirmed, the series’ characters could return within the scope of the shared crossover.
