Lords of the Fallen developers say they’ve “carried the torch” for Souls-likes for two years

The Lords of the Fallen team recently marked the game’s second anniversary. On the project’s X account they claimed the title has “carried the torch” for the soulslike genre for two years — a statement that sparked sharp reactions from fans and drew criticism across social media.

The game launched in 2023 and joined the wave of soulslike releases that year. It represented a notable step forward from the previous entry, delivering financial success to the studio and opening up new avenues for development.

Two years on, the project continues to receive updates and fresh content. The team maintains that they have been holding the “torch” for the genre throughout this period.

However, many soulslike enthusiasts disagree. Commenters pointed to Lies of P as a stronger representation of the genre, and numerous users compared Lords of the Fallen to FromSoftware titles such as Elden Ring and Dark Souls, noting lower player activity for the former.

Meanwhile, CI Games is preparing a sequel. The new installment is expected to release in 2026.
