Lin-Manuel Miranda Shares Touching Footage of Doreen Montalvo Reacting to Her ‘In the Heights’ Cameo

Lin-Manuel Miranda is remembering late Broadway actress Doreen Montalvo with a touching video amid the theatrical release of In the Heights.

On Saturday (June 12), Miranda shared sweet footage from February 2020 of Montalvo reacting to her cameo in the big-screen adaptation of his musical. The actress, who died last October at age 56, appeared in the original Broadway cast of In the Heights.

“Forever grateful that Doreen Montalvo got to see her moment, cheered on & surrounded by the women who loved her so much,” Miranda captioned the video on Twitter. “Grateful to @LacketyLac for having the presence of mind to capture it. Miss you Doreen.”

In the minute-long clip, Montalvo is seen surrounded by her fellow original Broadway cast members who were invited to watch the film during a vocal session. At the end, Montalvo covers her face with excitement as stars Karen Olivo, Krysta Rodriguez, Mandy Gonzalez and Janet Decal join in the celebration.

In the film version of In the Heights, Montalvo sings her line “Nina, Mira” in the song “Breathe.”

Montalvo’s Broadway credits also include On Your Feet, while her off-Broadway and national tour credits include Giant and Flashdance. Most recently, she performed in the Broadway production of Mrs. Doubtfire.

Her last screen credits were Jon M. Chu’s adaptation of In the Heights and Steven Spielberg’s upcoming West Side Story.
