Lena Dunham Felt ‘Like a Ghost’ Dating Jack Antonoff During His Relationship With a ‘Teen Pop Star’

Lena Dunham Reflects on Tensions During Jack Antonoff Relationship in New Memoir

In her latest memoir, Famesick, Lena Dunham offers an intimate look at her former relationship with producer and Bleachers frontman Jack Antonoff. Among the personal revelations, the Girls creator details a particularly difficult period during their five-year romance, which she attributes, in part, to Antonoff’s professional proximity to a young pop star he was mentoring at the time.

Released Tuesday (April 14), the memoir chronicles the couple’s life together, including a chapter where a collaborator became a fixture in the home they shared. Dunham describes the musician as being deeply immersed in the studio process, noting that the young star—who affectionately called her “Aunt Lena”—demanded a significant amount of emotional energy from Antonoff.

According to excerpts published by Entertainment Weekly, Dunham recalls an instance where she discovered the collaborator weeping on the sofa with her head in Antonoff’s lap. She describes the scene as strikingly intimate, noting that Antonoff offered a level of tenderness that felt absent from her own interactions with him at that time.

Dunham admits she eventually confronted the guitarist about the blurred lines, expressing that the dynamic felt unsettling. She reveals that she often felt like an outsider in her own home, to which Antonoff reportedly retorted that she was merely struggling with the fact that the singer did not reciprocate her friendship. Reflecting on the dynamic now, Dunham candidly acknowledges that while she maintained firm boundaries, she may have been too blind to realize that her partner was not upholding them with the same rigor.

Since their split in early 2018, both have moved on. Dunham married Luis Felber in 2021, and Antonoff wed Margaret Qualley in 2023. Beyond these interpersonal tensions, Famesick also touches on the complexities of their eventual breakup, with Dunham admitting to infidelity with a former flame shortly before their official separation.

In the years since, Antonoff has solidified his status as a titan of modern pop production. A multi-time Grammy winner for Producer of the Year, he has served as a key creative force behind chart-topping records for artists like Taylor Swift, Kendrick Lamar, and Sabrina Carpenter. His band, Bleachers, is currently preparing for the May release of their new album, Everyone for Ten Minutes.
