Nearly fifteen years after introducing the world to her melancholic aesthetic with “Video Games,” Lana Del Rey has officially crossed the threshold into the digital gaming realm. On Thursday, April 16, the singer-songwriter unveiled “First Light,” a hauntingly cinematic track composed specifically as the theme song for the upcoming James Bond video game of the same name.
Crafted in collaboration with iconic Bond franchise composer David Arnold, “First Light” leans into Del Rey’s signature noir-pop sound. The track begins with her smooth, breathy vocals floating over a moody arrangement of deep bass, rhythmic percussion, and lush strings. As the production swells into a dramatic brass-heavy crescendo, she weaves a lyrical narrative of fate and temptation: “Can’t say I’m surprised to see you running towards the sun / Like a moth to a flame / People try and stop you, all the fates just watch you / Dying just to know whether you’ll play your life like a game.”
The highly anticipated 007: First Light, developed by IO Interactive in partnership with Amazon MGM Studios, is slated for a May release. A lyric video accompanying the track features a sleek, high-definition render of the franchise’s legendary secret agent—a sharp-looking, brown-haired operative navigating the high-stakes shadows typical of the Bond lore.
While this marks a departure from a traditional film soundtrack, it cements Del Rey’s status as a master of atmosphere within the 007 ecosystem. Her contribution arrives as the latest in a long, storied legacy of Bond anthems, following Billie Eilish and Finneas’ Academy Award-winning success with “No Time to Die,” and joining the ranks of legendary contributors like Adele, Madonna, and Paul McCartney.
