Kirill Sokolov to Direct Animated Film “Alone in the Ocean”

Kirill Sokolov, the filmmaker behind the dark comedy Why Don’t You Just Die!, is set to helm the upcoming animated feature Alone in the Ocean. The project will dramatize the extraordinary true story of Stanislav “Slava” Kurilov, a Soviet oceanographer and freediver who famously defected from the USSR in 1974 by plunging from a cruise ship into the vast, open ocean.

Facing travel restrictions that barred him from leaving the country, Kurilov seized a daring opportunity during a 20-day voyage aboard a Soviet vessel departing from Vladivostok. In December 1974, he leaped overboard near the Philippines. Equipped with nothing more than a mask, fins, and a snorkel, he drifted and swam for nearly three days. Against all odds, he traversed roughly 100 kilometers of open water before successfully reaching land.

The screenplay will be adapted from Kurilov’s posthumously published autobiography, which bears the same title, Alone in the Ocean.

A release date for the film has not yet been announced.
