Years after their split, Kim Kardashian has spoken candidly about the difficulties of being married to someone grappling with mental-health challenges.

On the October 15 episode of Call Her Daddy, the entrepreneur and media personality described the strain of her relationship with Ye, who has at times said he lives with bipolar disorder and autism. She referenced episodes of erratic, public behavior — including controversial statements on X and accusations leveled at her about their children — and how those incidents shaped her experience during and after the marriage.

“People can say there were signs, and maybe I missed some of them,” Kardashian told host Alex Cooper. “When someone has a crisis, you naturally try to support them. But if they aren’t willing to pursue changes that would be healthy, the relationship can become damaging.”

She added that when children are involved, the decision to leave becomes more complex because it alters everyone’s life permanently. “If you reach a point where you don’t expect things to improve, you have to make very difficult choices,” she said.

Kardashian and Ye were married in 2014 and share four children: North, Saint, Chicago and Psalm. In 2016 Ye was hospitalized following what was reported as a psychiatric emergency that led to temporary psychosis tied to extreme exhaustion and dehydration. Five years later, Kardashian filed for divorce; their separation was finalized in 2022.

While still married, Kardashian said she sometimes felt unsafe — not only physically but emotionally and financially. She recalled returning home to find multiple Lamborghinis gone and learning they had been gifted to friends without her knowledge.

After their breakup, Kardashian dated Pete Davidson, a relationship that prompted a series of public attacks from Ye — including a music video that depicted a claymation version of Davidson in a disturbing scene. Kardashian described feeling protective and upset on Davidson’s behalf, and said that experience has made her cautious about dating publicly again.

“That made me really sad,” she explained. “It wasn’t fair to him. It’s made me put up a guard so I don’t put anyone else in that position, even though I don’t want to live my life in fear.”

Today, Kardashian says her priority is raising their children and working toward a constructive co-parenting dynamic. She noted it has been “a couple of months” since the family had last heard from Ye.

Reflecting on her decision to leave, she said it was necessary for her own wellbeing and for her role as a mother. “I had to save myself to be a better mom,” she said. “I hope in time they’ll understand.”

Billboard has reached out to Ye’s representatives for comment.
