Keith Urban Alters ‘The Fighter’ Lyrics at Recent Concert Inspired by Nicole Kidman

As Keith Urban’s personal life shifts, so too has the way he performs one of his best-known songs. During a recent concert, the country star altered the lyric from “The Fighter” to reference his tourmate, 25-year-old guitarist Maggie Baugh.

Instead of singing the familiar line “When they’re tryna get to you, baby I’ll be the fighter,” Urban changed the words mid-performance to, “When they’re tryna get to you, Maggie I’ll be your guitar player,” while Baugh stood beside him onstage.

Baugh shared video of the moment on her Instagram account on September 27, 2025, captioning the clip with surprise. The post appeared two days before reports surfaced confirming that Urban and his wife of nearly two decades had separated.

The onstage swap drew extra attention because “The Fighter,” a duet originally recorded with Carrie Underwood, has long been associated with Urban’s marriage. The single, released in 2016, climbed to No. 38 on the Billboard Hot 100 and reached No. 2 on the Hot Country Songs chart.

Urban has previously explained that the song sprang from a private conversation with Nicole Kidman about supporting one another during difficult times. In interviews he described the track as a personal vow to protect and care for someone when challenges arise.

Urban and Kidman began dating in 2005 and married in 2006; the couple share two daughters, both now teenagers. One day after reports of their separation, Kidman filed for divorce on September 30, 2025, citing “marital difficulties and irreconcilable differences.”
