James Turrell started work on the Roden Crater Project within the 1970s. Since then, Turrell has labored to rework the volcano crater, positioned in Flagstaff, Arizona, into an observatory. Turrell’s website explains: “Organized as a distinct set of changing experiences of light, Turrell’s intervention in the natural form of Roden Crater consists of a series of chambers, pathways, tunnels, and openings onto the sky from within and around the crater’s surface.”
West visited the Roden Crater web site in December and tweeted, “This is life changing.” In a press release to The Wall Street Journal, West mentioned that he desires the Roden Crater Project to be “experienced and enjoyed for eternity.” Turrell instructed WSJ that he was “thrilled” by West’s donation.
In 2015, Turrell made headlines for being Drake’s inspiration behind the “Hotline Bling” video. The artist made a statement clarifying that he had nothing to do with the video. “Neither I nor any of my woes was involved in any way in the making of the ‘Hotline Bling’ video,” he wrote.
