James Gunn Denies Rumors About Milly Alcock’s Supergirl Role

Comment Views: 1

James Gunn has run DC Studios as co-CEO since the new DC cinematic universe launched, and fans have scrutinized him closely as he reshapes Warner Bros.’ slate of superhero movies and TV shows. Superman and Lanterns have been hits. This summer’s Supergirl was an unqualified disaster for the young DCU. That led to unsubstantiated speculation about another overhaul and to votes of no confidence in Gunn. Gunn and Peter Safran have received renewed trust in shepherding the DCU under Warner Bros. Discovery’s new ownership, but angry DC fans keep looking for weak spots.

One such story surfaced last week, when Supergirl star Milly Alcock scrubbed her Instagram account of every mention of the DC Studios film. The move was harmless, yet it spawned headlines speculating that Alcock had been fired, recast or had quit the DCU. Little evidence backed any of that. As he often does, Gunn answered the rumors directly.

On Threads, Gunn called the rumor that Alcock had been removed from her role as Supergirl “BS.” He added that it and other rumors about in-development DCU projects “couldn’t be more false.”

Gunn keeps answering ‘fan’ nonsense

Gunn was actually responding to three rumors. One said Matt Reeves is no longer directing The Batman Part 2. He is, though Steven Soderbergh is stepping in to help Reeves finish filming. Another said the Superman sequel Man of Tomorrow “had a test screening and it got poor reviews.” The third was the claim that Alcock had been removed as Supergirl.

Gunn replied to all of it: “Oh brother. You guys just have to stop listening to BS, and I’m mostly done shooting down rumors as there are so many, and I’m not on here much. But all three of these couldn’t be more false. I’m showing PETER SAFRAN my first Director’s Cut today — he’s the first person to see it obviously — and that’s a month early!”

Comic book movie rumors like these usually produce more smoke than fire. A likelier explanation for the Instagram cleanup is that Alcock, whose profile is heavily curated, has finished promoting the film. She may also not want to give space to people who leave creepy comments on women’s social media posts.

Alcock’s next DCU appearance

Alcock is set to return as Kara Zor-El/Supergirl next year in DC Studios’ Man of Tomorrow. She joins David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, who both reprise their roles. The film also stars:

  • Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane
  • Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen
  • Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl
  • Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr.
  • María Gabriela de Faría as the Engineer
  • Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher
  • Aaron Pierre as John Stewart/Green Lantern
  • Adria Arjona, reportedly as Maxima, although some rumors suggest she may be Wonder Woman

Andre Royo, Matthew Lillard and Sinqua Walls have been cast in unspecified roles.

Supergirl is now streaming on HBO Max. Man of Tomorrow arrives in movie theaters on July 9, 2027.
