James Gunn Addresses Status of Batman and Wally West’s Flash in DC Universe

If you want the latest on DC’s cinematic universe, you may need to check Threads. DC Studios boss James Gunn likes to post there and often answers fan questions at random. His most recent replies produced some much-needed updates on some of the DC Universe’s most anticipated characters.

One fan asked whether Batman’s eventual suit would have the same texture as Superman’s. Gunn revealed that the suit isn’t designed yet. That suggests the Caped Crusader’s DCU debut is still a long way off. Bruce Wayne could appear as a suitless cameo in next year’s Man of Tomorrow, but that seems unlikely. We may need to wait for The Brave and the Bold to advance in development before we learn more about how Batman will look.

Gunn also tempered expectations about Wally West’s DCU debut. A fan asked whether the Flash is currently active in the universe, and Gunn answered, “Who knows?” That’s a curious reply, since Gunn would be the one to know. Fans will likely read it as dodging the question, and he might be. No Flash project is currently known to be in the works. Still, the character is so beloved that it would be wild for him never to show up.

Gunn sets the record straight on what DC projects are canon

Man of Tomorrow, the sequel to 2025’s Superman, will bring back a lot of familiar faces. One of the most interesting confirmed actors is Xolo Maridueña, who reprises his role as Jaime Reyes/Blue Beetle from the 2023 film. His return could suggest that the film counts as canon in the new DCU, even though it was the second-to-last release in the DC Extended Universe.

Gunn has now clarified that Blue Beetle is returning, but the 2023 film itself is not canon. He also said 2022’s Black Adam is not canon, though few people really thought it was.

After Man of Tomorrow, Gunn has no projects lined up to direct. Fans are already theorizing about what his next DC film might be. It won’t be the live-action Teen Titans movie, since Gunn shot that down in a reply to a fan. Plenty of other confirmed projects remain that he could attach himself to.
