James Cameron Talks About His Unfilmed “Jurassic Park”

James Cameron, the creator of The Terminator, Titanic and the Avatar films, nearly became involved with another well-known franchise: Jurassic Park.

However, director Steven Spielberg beat him to it — a development Cameron says turned out to be for the best.

“I tried to buy the rights to the book [the 1990 novel of the same name by Michael Crichton — ed.], but he [Spielberg] beat me by a few hours. When I saw the movie, I realised I wasn’t the right person for that job. He was. He made a dinosaur film aimed at children, whereas I would have made Aliens with dinosaurs, and that would have been unfair,” Cameron admitted in an interview with Empire.

Spielberg also directed the sequel The Lost World (1997). The most recent film in the franchise, Jurassic World: Dominion, premiered in July and earned $868 million worldwide.

Cameron’s next project, Avatar: Flame and Ash, is set to open internationally on December 19.
