Is PlayStation Following Xbox’s Lead? Company Reportedly Preparing Single-Purchase Feature for Multiple Platforms

Sony may be preparing a countermove to a competitor. Players have spotted a new icon in the PlayStation Store that could indicate the return of cross-buy functionality.

Gamers remember cross-buy well: a few years ago it allowed you to buy a title once and play it across Sony platforms—from PlayStation 3 and Vita to PS4. It was a convenient solution that let players continue without repurchasing.

There are now indicators the feature might return in a broader form. An icon depicting PlayStation alongside a PC appeared in store files, hinting at bundled purchases for consoles and computers—similar to Xbox Play Anywhere.

This hasn’t been confirmed by Sony, but the company could follow Microsoft’s example and allow a single purchase to work on both PC and console. Such a move would fit Sony’s strategy as it increasingly publishes games on Steam and the Epic Games Store.

User speculation also points to a possible revival of a portable PlayStation. Cross-buy between PC and console would be an excellent match for a portable Sony device, enabling seamless play across hardware without extra expense.
