In Season 3 of “Primal,” Spear Becomes a Zombie — Adult Swim Reveals Teaser for Tartakovsky’s Series Return
Genndy Tartakovsky didn’t want to say goodbye to Spear so soon.
Adult Swim has released the first teaser for the third season of Primal — the animated series from Genndy Tartakovsky that has already achieved cult status.
The teaser premiered at New York Comic Con, where Tartakovsky explained his choice to bring the character back. The director said he hadn’t planned to resurrect Spear, but later regretted removing the character from the story so early.
“I spent twenty episodes getting the audience to care about these characters… and then I killed one of them. Maybe it was premature. Later I wondered if there might be a workaround. It’s a bold idea — richly imaginative — and I really loved it.”
This ‘workaround’ appears to draw on the series’ own lore. The first season episode “Plague of Madness” already featured zombie-like creatures, but Tartakovsky now teases “something new that no one expects” — something that “will turn everything on its head.”
The creator also revealed the third season will shift the show’s tone and energy. While the action and the series’ emotional core will remain intact, the new arc will probe “the discovery of humanity in death.”
The third season of Primal is set to premiere in January 2026 on Adult Swim and HBO Max.
