The latest U.K. New Year Honors List has spotlighted several luminaries from the entertainment and music sectors, with Idris Elba, Ellie Goulding, and Cynthia Erivo leading the prestigious cohort of recipients.

Bestowed annually by the King, these accolades celebrate exceptional contributions across British society. The hierarchy of honors ranges from Member (MBE) and Officer (OBE) to Commander (CBE), culminating in the esteemed titles of Sir or Dame via knighthoods and damehoods. This year’s comprehensive roster features 1,157 individuals spanning the worlds of politics, science, sports, and the arts.

Idris Elba has officially been granted a knighthood, entitling him to be addressed as Sir Idris Elba. The actor and musician was lauded primarily for his extensive philanthropic endeavors, particularly his high-profile advocacy against knife crime and the establishment of the Elba Hope Foundation alongside his wife, Sabrina. Their foundation provides critical funding and support to grassroots organizations across the United Kingdom, the United States, and Africa.

Reflecting on his journey, Elba’s early career was famously kickstarted by a £1,500 grant from the Prince’s Trust, which allowed him to attend the National Youth Music Theatre. Since that pivotal start, he has achieved global acclaim for his iconic roles in The Wire and Luther, while simultaneously maintaining a vibrant presence in the electronic music scene as DJ Big Driis, performing at major international festivals.

Joining the ranks of the honorees are Wicked star Cynthia Erivo and pop sensation Ellie Goulding, both of whom have been awarded MBEs. Erivo’s recognition stems from her profound impact on drama and the performing arts. Meanwhile, Goulding was honored for her musical achievements as well as her dedicated activism regarding climate change and biodiversity, serving as a global environmental ambassador for the United Nations.

Renowned composer Max Richter has been awarded a CBE, an honor that arrives just as anticipation builds for his original score in the upcoming film Hamnet, directed by Chloe Zhao. Additionally, Eve Graham—a founding member of The New Seekers—was granted an MBE for her lifelong commitment to the music industry. Graham is best known for the 1972 global anthem “I’d Like To Teach The World To Sing.”

The industry’s professional infrastructure was also celebrated in this year’s list. Karen Ruth Emanuel, founder and CEO of Key Production Group, received an OBE for her services to music. Philip Patterson, a former specialist at the Department for Business and Trade, was also awarded an OBE for his industry contributions, while Janet Fischer, chair of Live Music Now, received an MBE for her work at the intersection of music and charity.
