Is House of the Dragon season 4 confirmed?

HBO has renewed House of the Dragon for a fourth and final season. The final outing will conclude the story of the Targaryen war of succession laid out in George R.R. Martin’s book Fire & Blood.

What is the plot of House of the Dragon season 4?

Martin has expressed his displeasure with House of the Dragon showrunner Ryan Condal for making changes to the source material, including cutting and combining characters. It remains unclear how faithful an adaptation season 4 will be. The war ends in tragedy with the dragons dying out. Their loss removes the Targaryens’ godlike status and leaves the house vulnerable to Robert Baratheon’s coup.

The Hightower forces were decimated at Tumbleton, but Queen Rhaenyra, played by Emma D’Arcy, is in a very precarious position. Her dragonrider Ulf the White, played by Tom Bennett, defected. Hugh Hammer, played by Kieran Brew, is likely to do the same after his wife died at Tumbleton. Rhaenyra ordered Daemon, played by Matt Smith, to show restraint at Tumbleton. Ulf’s dragonfire combined with Ormund Hightower, played by James Norton, using children as human shields will ensure the stories told about the battle paint Rhaenyra as ruthless. That reputation will be reinforced by Rhaenyra’s decision to kill the High Septon because he refused to ordain her, along with the suicide of her pregnant half-sister Helaena, played by Phia Saban.

The threats against Rhaenyra are greater than ever. The decision to declare Aegon, played by Tom Glynn-Carney, dead backfired when he reappeared with his dragon Sunfyre. The king reunited with his brother Aemond, played by Ewan Mitchell, who seeks to make amends by finding his mighty dragon Vhagar and fighting alongside Aegon to depose Rhaenyra. The queen is barely able to control King’s Landing since Larys Strong, played by Matthew Needham, stole the treasury. Most of the Goldcloaks quit following a rash of assassinations funded by Ormund. Daeron Targaryen, played by Benjamin Evan Ainsworth, is another contender to the Iron Throne at large following the Battle of Tumbleton. He presumably fled along with his dragon. Expect more betrayals and dramatic battles to seal the fate of the Seven Kingdoms in season 4.

What is the potential release date for House of the Dragon season 4?

Prince Joffrey Velaryon (Oscar Eskinazi) stands next to his mother Rhaenyra (Emma D'arcy) in House of the Dragon

HBO stated that House of the Dragon season 4 will be released in 2028. Filming has not begun, and Needham told Polygon in a recent interview that he has not seen any scripts. There has been a two-year gap between each season. Presuming the pattern holds, season 4 should premiere in June 2028. HBO will tide fans over by releasing A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2 in 2027. Fans visiting London can also see the downfall of House Targaryen in the stage play The Mad King.
