Historian criticizes Kingdom Come Deliverance combat system for being too realistic

Medieval historian and gamer Andrea Maraschi prefers the much simpler combat mechanics found in Chivalry over Kingdom Come: Deliverance.

Warhorse Studios paid close attention to various details while developing Kingdom Come: Deliverance. The project turned out quite realistic, and according to some specialists, it is overly realistic in places.

Medieval historian Andrea Maraschi recently gave an interview to the host of the Andrew Channel YouTube channel. He teaches at a university, studies the daily life and diet of people from that era alongside their modern media portrayals in movies, TV shows, and video games, and is also a gamer himself.

The creators of Kingdom Come: Deliverance aimed to build a very realistic combat system, but Maraschi believes they leaned too far into realism, as not all players were able to appreciate the final result.

The specialist believes that excessive realism does not work in games:

As I recall, [the developers] ran quite a lot of promotional campaigns related to motion capture, with very precise and realistic reconstruction of the combat process itself. Although I am not an expert in this field myself, in the end, very few people found [such combat] engaging. And that is one of the problems: after all, a game is a game, so in my opinion, excessive realism never works. That is the impression I formed.

Andrea Maraschi stated that he enjoys the combat system in the online action game Chivalry more, whereas in Kingdom Come: Deliverance, the most enjoyable parts were simply walking around the world:

A paradox arises: I greatly appreciate realism, but I spent much more time in Chivalry than in Kingdom Come. My best moments in Kingdom Come are when I was doing nothing at all.

His interviewer supported him, saying, “That is the beauty of the game: the ability to talk to NPCs, explore the world, try to rob someone, then get caught and get a beating. It is fun precisely because of that: the simulation is incredibly immersive.”
