Hideo Kojima Criticizes DLSS, Says AI Does Not Understand Author’s Intent
Hideo Kojima has criticized DLSS 5, arguing that artificial intelligence cannot grasp an author’s artistic vision and may distort a game’s emotional core.
In a new episode of the KOJI10 podcast, the creator of Metal Gear Solid and Death Stranding shared his mixed feelings about NVIDIA’s new technology. While DLSS 5 can transform character 3D models to look almost like real actors, Hideo Kojima is concerned about AI interference in the work of artists.
The discussion was prompted by footage featuring an early version of DLSS 5 in Death Stranding 2. Some viewers pointed out an unnatural visual appearance and argued that the game did not need such enhancements at all.
Kojima’s main grievance is the lack of contextual understanding by AI. He compared the situation to the restoration of old films and the remastering of classical music, noting that an algorithm cannot comprehend why specific lighting, shadows, or film grain were chosen. Consequently, automatic enhancements can alter the emotional message of a work.
Kojima also stated that he would not want anyone to modify his games independently using such tools without authorial oversight.
