To Australian rock icon Jimmy Barnes, Sam Neill was more than just a cinematic heavyweight—he was a vibrant, joyful pillar of his inner circle.
Neill, the esteemed actor whose career spanned generations and continents—from the prehistoric thrills of Jurassic Park and the haunting beauty of The Piano to his commanding turn in Peaky Blinders—passed away on Monday, March 13, at the age of 78.
“What an incredibly heavy day,” shared Barnes, whose storied career remains a landmark in Australian music. “My dear friend Sam has left us. It feels impossible that we won’t be sharing another meal or a glass of wine at his winery, where we spent so much time laughing, singing, and trying to make sense of the world together.”
Reflecting on their bond, Barnes described a man who brought light into every space he occupied. “Sam was exactly who you saw on screen: kind, witty, profoundly intelligent, and remarkably humble. He was family. He sat by my side during my own hospital recovery, and I was honored to return that support when he needed it most. I am forever grateful for the life we shared. Rest easy, my friend—you’ll always be in our hearts.”
The sentiment was echoed across the industry. The members of The Cruel Sea remembered Neill not only for his peerless craft but for the warmth he exuded—and the delightful social media presence that provided a much-needed escape for many during the pandemic. “One of the true joys of recent years was following him online,” noted bassist Kenny Gormly. “He was a man of immense humanity and dry, stoic humor.”
Former New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern also paid tribute, recalling a recent evening spent with Neill in Sydney. “We had the profound pleasure of discussing life and politics,” she wrote. “He was a person of deep principle, never afraid to champion justice. We have lost an extraordinary Kiwi, and I am deeply saddened.”
Prior to his death, Neill had successfully navigated a challenging battle with Stage 3 angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, entering remission following innovative CAR T-cell therapy. Tragically, complications arising from pneumonia ultimately proved insurmountable for the beloved actor.
His family shared the news of his passing with profound sorrow, noting that Neill passed away in Sydney, surrounded by his loved ones and with the grace that defined his life. They expressed sincere gratitude to the team at St Vincent’s Private Hospital for their compassionate care and have asked for privacy as they mourn this irreplaceable loss.
Sam Neill is survived by his children, Andrew, Tim, and Elena, as well as his six grandchildren.
