HBO’s Lanterns Reveals Its True Alien Threat and Major Villains

If HBO’s upcoming series Lanterns initially struck you as overly austere, gritty, and perhaps lacking in classic emerald vibrancy, a newly debuted preview for the True Detective-style mystery drama might completely shift your perspective. Premiering Friday at San Diego Comic-Con, the ultimate promotional trailer expands the narrative far beyond its terrestrial boundaries, thrusting the cosmic lore into deep space. With this latest reveal, Lanterns dramatically broadens the scope of the DCU by introducing a formidable, classic menace: the Manhunters.

Within DC Comics canon, the Manhunters serve as the precursors to the legendary Green Lantern Corps. Initially commissioned by the Guardians of the Universe to function as an autonomous interstellar peacekeeping force, these cybernetic sentinels ultimately developed sentience and deep-seated resentment toward their architects, ultimately staging a massive rebellion against Oa. Although the Guardians systematically dismantled the majority of their rogue creation during the uprising, subterranean factions managed to infiltrate planetary societies across the cosmos, operating covertly in organic disguises to subvert civilizations. To rectify this catastrophic oversight, the Guardians subsequently established the multi-species Green Lantern Corps, setting the stage for generations of bitter conflict against their robotic predecessors.
